Let’s Do The Twist!! ..Chubby Checker
On August 8 1960 Ernest Evans, better known as Chubby Checker had a number one hit (The Twist) that stayed in the top 40 for 15 weeks, returning again at number one in November of 1961. The Twist became the only song to hit number one twice. This song put an end to people dancing together as a couple and induced older people to dance to teenager type music.
Chubby Checker now 67 still tours the country in his bus doing concerts for people of all ages. His films included, “Don’t Knock the Twist” and “Twist Around the Clock. He was born in Spring Gulley, South Carolina and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began singing at an early age after his mother took him to see a concert featuring Sugar Chile Robinson, who inspired him to have a career in show business.
Chubby Checker’s version of the twist took the world by storm, although Hank Ballard and The Midnighters, who wrote the song, had an earlier recording that reached number 28 on Billboards top 40. Chubby Checker’s The Twist was voted the number one hit of all time, although in England, “Let’s Twist Again” was more popular.

The Muser has memories of the twist, but one that really stands out is when at a multi family gathering, some of the parents were doing the twist, so us kids started copying them. I slipped on a wooden floor and knocked myself out!
