At the cutting edge of Hi-Tech

August 12 1877 Thomas Edison, the 30 year old wizard of new technology, is on the brink of developing his first wholly original invention.

A small group of people gather at Edison’s “Invention factory” at Menlo Park New Jersey, to witness a public demonstration of the new device – a phonograph which records the human voice.

They listened dumbfounded to a recording of Edison reciting “Mary had a little lamb”

The phonograph has been ingeniously adapted from the telephone repeater; a telephone diaphragm connects to an embossing needle which impresses on a suitable material the variations of the human voice.

Do you our readers have any comments on the quality of reproduction of sound that comes from playing vinyl records versus CD?

I dont really miss them because it seemed no matter how careful you were, you were going to scratch them, and then get to hear Sea of Love play over and over. Okay, I shameless stole that from the movie, but you get my point I think. Funny thing is I still call my CD’s albums.

  2. I know were you are coming from, playing a CD is so easy.
With records you had to be extra careful, putting them back in the sleeve after playing was a must, records seemed to collect mounds of dust and trash. I must say this though listening to
a record played through a tube amplifier had a warmer feeling
    than a CD.
