Going Mobile!

The last several posts have been about music and artists from several years ago.
Lets face it, As an older person I remember the music of that era, this was part of my younger life. So you can be sure future postings will be mostly of times gone by,( then again yesterday is times gone by!) maybe the younger readers will enjoy reading something of the past in music.
Today music is so prolific it is difficult to keep up with. Is that why radio stations only cover a single genre of music? As a mobile Disc Jockey thirty years ago we carried around two hundred records totaling about two thousand titles to play eighty songs over a four hour gig and still try to cover all genre of music. These titles may be on 45s, LP and even cassette tape. Our work was cut out to keep the music flowing and the dance floor busy. With two discs spinning and a couple of tape machines, we had to keep up with each piece of equipment that was playing to the output at all times. Doing this with people talking to you and making announcements, sometimes it got messed up, playing records at two different speeds it did at times get hilarious. Made for fun times.

When the CD came to being it meant we had to start collecting a new library of music and additional equipment to play the CD. Today the CD collection is now on a computer hard drive, along with some of the record collection . We always carry an additional hard drive loaded with 50,000 songs and a few customized discs in the event of a problem. If all else fails its out with the straw hat and cane. 50,000 titles are also in MP3 format on a Laptop computer hard drive linked to a professional DJ program that does everything for us. (how lazy have we got)at least it gives us time to pay more attention to the group, meet with the people at the gig and join in some of the fun.

When playing to a crowd of people whether it be fifty or two hundred you would be surprised at some of the requests they could come up with. They have even sung or hummed the tune when they could not remember the title or artist, If they had been drinking this was a show of its own.

Working as a mobile DJ you have to have professional equipment that sounds good at volume levels you normally would not listen at, and without distortion. Each event we have to load in and out, set up and break down, prepare your program and be prepared to change the format if its not getting the dance floor active. A four hour gig is actually a 10 hour day depending on travel time. Lets not forget any lighting we have to have and set up. All in all if the crowd has a great time and the dance floor is busy it is worth all of the time and effort spent to see people enjoy themselves.

If you have any requests for future music postings let us know.

I gotta million of em’

  1. Knowing how nuts you are, your talents are much better put to use entertaining, not shuffling records or disks! I think the new equipment probably suits you fine.
