Guitar Wars. Henjoy vs Twistedmuser!

Henjoy

 1- Merle Travis:

He is the Grand Daddy of all Guitar players, he influenced not just country but all genre of guitar playing and was prominent enough to have a style of playing named after him.

2 – Chet Atkins:

Influenced the Nashville Sound that took Country Music over to the pop charts, he understood  the way the guitar is played and was an accomplished guitar player.

3- Eric Clapton:

Without a doubt he has established himself as being the best rock guitarist of his generation.

4- Jimmi  Hendrix:

In the short time he was classed as a superstar he rocked the world with his explosive  guitar playing and technical ability to shape sound.

 5- Roy Clark:

His middle of the road approach to guitar playing filled a void were his expert playing   reached out to all ages and genre of listeners.

 versus

 TwistedMuser

 1 – Duane Allman:

He was already an accomplished guitarist playing with such greats as Eric Clapton and Wilson Pickett, but when he learned to play slide, he made the Allman Brothers what they are now, which is one of the greatest southern jam bands to exist. I can only imagine what they would be like now if he had not died in a motorcycle accident in 69.

 2 – Robert Johnson:

Where would Blues and subsequently rock have gone without him? Supposedly he made a deal with the devil in order to acquire his legendary skills.

 3 – Jack White

Yeah, I know he does not have the pure talent that others have, but he does have a style that makes me wear out the repeat button on my CD player. His range of musical styles he covers is amazing, from Blues to Rock to Americana.

 4 – Ritchie Blackmore

Deep Purple. Smoke on the  Water. Enough Said.

 5 – Link Wray

A man ahead of his time! If he had played what he did in 1958 (Rumble) a decade later, you wouldn’t be scratching your head now saying “Who the heck is he?”

  1. Not even close guys: Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana, Gary Rossington (Freebird solo)

    • The only one I would even come close to agreeing with is Gary Rossington, but since Freebird is not really a solo, but a trio, you would have to list some combination of players past or present. I do love Freebird though!

  2. Okay……tough to judge but….

    1) Clapton
    2) Joe Satriani
    3) Eddie Van Halen

When I see one of these lists that doesn’t include Steve Howe of Yes, I don’t bother reading the rest of the list….

  4. Yes, Clapton is one of the greatest, but he is first and foremost a blues guitarist…Eddie van Halen certainly belongs near the top of the best ROCK guitarists of all time!

  5. So far the comments have come up with some good names. Bring it on.
After a period of time maybe we can list all names and have a vote on who is the best.

Great picks by both of you, you needed to make it a top 10! I’m suprised at Henjoy though, after that nice article on Les Paul how he left off Steve Miller. Les was Steve Miller’s godfather, Les and T-Bone Walker taught Steve how to play. How would you like to have those two for teachers!! Also i would have to add Carlos Santana.

    • Thanks for the comments. It was a hard choice. T told me Les Paul would have been a good pick! Next time you are up here maybe you can meet Henjoy. You would like meeting him he knows tons about music.

  7. Thanks for the comments Joe, you are right
Les paul should have been on the list, in fact the list I wrote of about 20 names Les Paul was one of them but I had to cut the names to 5. In fact what I did was put the twenty names in a hat and drew out 5 names. There are so many great players in all genres of music its tough to come up with a number one.

Good choices! I have to admit though I have not heard of Gary Moore. Maybe our resident music writer will post something about him. Thanks for the comment.
